ABSTRACT
Retroperitoneal teratoma is a congenital retroperitoneal tumor containing theree germ layers, with no anatomical connections to reproperitoneal organs. The ultrasonographic findings of 9 pediatric retroperitoneal teratomas were analysed. The most characteristic ultrasonographic pattern was coplex echogenic tumor showing cystic mass containing variable pattern of solid echoes due to calcification, fatty component or other solid component. Calcifications showed high spotty echoes with posterior shadowing and fatty component showed very refractile echoes protruding into the cystic portion. In addition to plain abdominal radiography, the ultrasonographic characteristics of retroperitoneal teratoma is expected to improve diagnostic accuracy.
