ABSTRACT
A series of 149 patients with either clnically evident or equivocal appendicitis were examined with high-resolu-tion linear array transducer to evaluate the diagnostic accuracy of ultrasonography. Ultrasonography showed the sensitivity of 93%, specificity, of 92% and diagnostic accuracy of 93%, for clinically evident cases and 90%, 93% and 92% respectivel for clinically equivocal cases. The change in treatment plan made by surgeons was 20% for the former cases adn 29% for the later cases. Our results show that high resolution ultrasonography is a useful modality in the diagnosis of acute appendicitis and plays an important role in making decision on treatment plan regardless of clinical assessment.
