Scrotal ultrasonography in differential diagnosis of acute scrotum
Sang Jin Lee
ABSTRACT
The acute scrotum is a difficult clinical challenge because of numeorus etiologies including inflammatory processes, testicular torsion, trauma, and complicated tumors. As the chances of salvaging testicular function are inversely proportional to the epapsed time between onset of torsion/rupture and surgical repair of testes, prompt and accurate diagnosis is imperativer. The authors underwent scrotal ultrasonography in 35 patients with acute scrotum. Ultrasonogrphic findings in 18 patients with acute epididymitis were enlargement of the epididymes with decreased(N=13) or mixed(n=5) echogenicity. Three patients with acute stage(within 24 hours) of testicular torsion showed enlarged testes with homogeneous and slightly decreased echogenicity:the other three patiets with late stage showed enlarged epididymes and testes with diffuse mixed echogenciity.
