The diagnostic utiligy and findings of ultrasonography (US) on 55 cases of tissue proven proven bil duct carcinoma during the period of 1984 to 1988 were studied. Among the 55 cases, computed tomography(CT) was additionally performed on 30 cases and the resutls wer compared. Accuracy in dedfining the level of obstruction was 92.7% in US and 90% in CT. US showed superior accuracy in locating obstruction at common hepatic and ampullary area and CT at bifurcation area. Both showed inadequate results at intrapancreatic area. Accuracy in definite morphologic appearance of tumor was 80% in US and 73.3% in CT.US was more accurate in defining polypoid type and CT in defining poiypoid type and CT in defining diffuse sclerosing type. The accuracy of defining focal stenotic and bulky exophytic types were about the same between US and CT. Accuracy in detecting the cause of unresectabity was 60.5% in CT and 49.12% in US CT was more accurate than US in determining the resectability, but both were not satisfactory.
