Combination of shear wave elastography with B-mode ultrasound for detection of breast cancer and biopsy reduction: a systematic review and meta-analysis

ABSTRACT
This study was undertaken to compare the diagnostic performance and biopsy reduction rate of combined SWE and US with US alone for breast lesions and to determine the most discriminatory parameter in SWE. A systematic review and meta-analysis were conducted. The combining the SWE with the B-mode US improved the specificity from 0.61 to 0.85 (p = .009), compared with the B-mode US alone without significant changes in sensitivity or SROC. The frequency of unnecessary biopsy decreased by 41.1 % with adding SWE to the B-mode US. Adding SWE to the B-mode US is not only providing additional diagnostic information for differentiating the benignity and malignancy of breast lesions, but also decreasing the likelihood of an unnecessary biopsy.
